Plant crown workshops in Bauska Castle

In September 3rd and 10th, Bauska Castle will host a workshop on making plant crowns, wreaths, where everyone will have the opportunity to make his/her own crown from fragrant herbs and plants, inspired by the works of Renaissance artists – poetry, songs and paintings. Two workshops are planned for each date – at 12:00 and 15:00.
Everyone, both beginners and those with prior knowledge, will be able to participate in the workshop. Floristic master Ineta Ozoliņa – Skrūzmane will lead the class. The activity will be complemented by a story about the crowns of the Renaissance and the plants used then.
In the Renaissance, the crown was considered not only a beautiful, decorative costume accessory, but also gave it a symbolic meaning and believed it’s beneficial effects. Traditionally, the crown is associated with girls and virgins, but during the Renaissance, young boys and men also adorned themselves.
A crown was an essential part of costume in the Renaissance. For high-born society, crowns were made of more expensive materials: metal, precious stones, beads, wires, various fine fabrics, as well as from fresh flowers and plants. Peasants and townspeople could not afford fancy things for making wreaths, so they used plants available in nature.

The workshop takes place within the framework of the project “Historical Road: Raudondvaris-Bauska” educational program “Baltic treasure”.The main goal of the project is to increase the number of visitors to Bauska Castle Museum and Raudondvaris Manor (Lithuania) during the off-season and winter months. In the winter and autumn months of 2022, 20 master classes will be held at the Bauska Castle: making a leather case, making plant crowns, calligraphy, sgraffito technique and making tin jewellery.
