In the framework of the Interreg V-A Latvia–Lithuania Cross Border Cooperation Programme 2014–2020 project LLI-402 “Sports for Social Inclusion of At-risk Teenagers” (acronym „risk-free“), 27 sports events were organized in Visaginas municipality in September. These events were conducted by high-profile sportsmen and sportswomen acknowledged internationally and locally to motivate children and young people to participate in social activities through sport culture as a means to increase social inclusion and to prevent them from engaging in risky, criminal or immoral activities, thus facilitating their return to school and their reintegration into society.
In total, over 500 participants took part in these sports activities. They could participate in boxing, basketball, football and rowing training sessions. During the training, children and young people were taught patience, teamwork, responsibility and physical endurance. After the training, the children and youth could talk with the coaches in person and ask them questions. The trainings were conducted by such persons as boxing coach Denis Naidionov, recognized as one of the best coaches of the Lithuanian Boxing Federation in 2017, Raimundas Labuckas – a Lithuanian canoeist, multiple winner and prizeman of the World and European Championships and participant of Olympic Games Jevgenij Šuklin. Basketball training was conducted by Aleksandras Bražnikovas, the founder of the sports club Naks, a small-town basketball league player, who contributed significantly to the promotion of basketball in Visaginas municipality. The football training was led by Nikolajus Miščenko, the coach of the Visaginas Sports Center, who contributes a lot to the development of the next generation of football players.
The activities of Interreg V-A Latvia–Lithuania Cross Border Cooperation Programme 2014–2020 project LLI-402 “Sports for Social Inclusion of At-risk Teenagers” (acronym „risk-free“) contributed to the project’s main objective of protecting children and young people from risky activities and contributing to their integration into society through sport.
