Educational campaign about harmful effects of phosphorus and nitrogen on lakes is ongoing from September to December 2022, involving schools. The campaign is implemented by the Directorate of Žemaitija National Park in Northern Lithuania and Kurzeme Planning Region in Kurzeme region, Latvia.
Since one of the biggest environmental problems in lakes is water pollution with nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus), the aim of the campaign is to educate students about this environmental problem, to create interest in the environment and ecology, and to inform about how it is possible to reduce the use of nutrients in households.
The campaign is based on the environmental education program developed in the Live Lake project, as part of which an animated film has been created about the harmful effects of phosphorus and nitrogen and the possibilities to reduce them (available here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eE0BgyH4nNI). The Lake Researcher mobile application has also been created and is available to everyone. By determining the indicator species of flora and fauna in a simplified way and visually assessing the water body, it helps to identify the ecological situation of the lake.
As part of the campaign, small prizes and souvenirs made in the Project are also provided with the aim of motivating and rewarding students for involvement and active participation.
Campaign is organised in the project LLI-449 “Improving Governance and Management of Lakes in Kurzeme and North Lithuania” (LIVE LAKE).
