Institute of Agricultural Resources and Economics (AREI)
Description: Institute of Agroresources and Economics (AREI) was founded in 1913, and is one of the oldest and most experienced agricultural research institutions in the Baltic region. The main research areas of the Institute are: soil science, ecology, practical plants cultivation, seed cultivation and production, development of new varieties of plants, preservation of plant genetic resources. At the beginning of the last decade of the last century the Institute started to work more intensively and more concentrated on the development of products and technologies needed for organic agriculture and for development of environmentally friendly technologies for conventional and integrated farming. After more than 10 years research work carried in the area of organic agriculture and for development of environmentally friendly technologies for conventional and integrated farming and research achievements in those areas, AREI has set up an objective - to become the leading research institution in Eastern Europe in research for organic agriculture and research for environmentally friendly conventional and integrated agriculture. The Institute has a team of motivated researchers. Work and results of research of AREI are recognised at national and international level. It is taking part actively in national and international level research and development projects, inter alias FP projects. The Institute is collaborating and networking with large number of other research institutions, SMEs, regional and national level public authorities. It has more than 50 partners in Latvia, EU and the world.
