Birzai and Aizkraukle are improving life quality and safety

31 May 2021

The project No. LLI-457 „Improvement of living conditions in deprived cross border region by promotion of safe and responsible communities“ / Safe community successfully goes on. In order to improve living conditions, life quality and safety in Biržai and Aizkraukle municipalities, 65 video surveillance cameras are already established in 19 different parts of Aizkraukle. Additional 23 cameras in 9 places will be arranged in the nearest future. Aizkraukle municipality will also purchase 2 body cameras. Body cameras are wearable cameras used by police and other law enforcement organizations in countries around the world.

Birzai district municipality also has finished the public procurement procedure and video surveillance cameras will be soon located in the most visited places in 7 villages. Initially the LP of the project has planned to install 8 rotatable cameras in the busiest and the most important places of 7 rural parishes. However, after analysing today’s needs and the situation, which has changed since the application was submitted, it was decided, that it would be more rational to install 3 stationary cameras instead of 1 rotatable (total: 24 stationary cameras instead of 8 rotatable) as this way the continuous and uninterrupted observation of the location will be ensured. Installation works will be finished until October, 2021 at the latest.

Video surveillance cameras installation is not a goal of the project but a tool to enhance cooperation and communication inside and among communities, promote the idea of safe neighbourhood. Installing more cameras will have a more positive impact on life quality of the deprived communities.

The main objective of the project – to improve living conditions, life quality and safety in Biržai and Aizkraukle municipalities by increasing social responsibility and activity of residents.
