Interreg V-A Latvia-Lithuania programme 2014-2020 is pleased to invite you to celebrate Balts’ Unity Day 2016 on 24 September in Liepaja, Latvia. The festivities will start at 11:00 with opening speeches by Speaker of the Saeima of the Republic of Latvia Ms Ināra Mūrniece and Speaker of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania Ms Loreta Graužinienė, as well as representatives of this years’ Balts’ Unity Day host city Liepaja.
Throughout the day different activities will take place in various places/venues in Liepaja giving you an opportunity to enjoy the talent of Latvian and Lithuanian musicians, choirs, orchestras, and craftsmen. For cinema lovers, a documentary “’The Land of Winds” and animation “The Golden Horse” will be demonstrated at cinema “Balle”.
In addition, in the premises of Liepaja University “Balts readings” will take place, starting with discussion on cooperation between Latvia and Lithuania in education and research. This event might be particularly interesting for those who enjoy Latvian and Lithuanian literature and language.
Those who like art and photography are welcome to visit exhibition of unique photos of amber by photographer Andris Zēgners in concert hall “The Great Amber” and paintings of Latvian and Lithuanian artists Andris Vītoliņš and Mikalojus Vilutis in Liepaja museum.
Also, a special networking event to bring together organisations and individual professionals from Latvia and Lithuania involved in culture, business, non-governmental sector and education who are looking to find partners for different projects, activities and common measures will take place within the framework of Balts’ Unity Day. The celebration of Balts’ Unity Day will end with a concert in concert hall “The Great Amber” of Latvian National Armed Forces big band and Lithuanian National Guard big band accompanied by soloist Jurgis Bruza and accordionist Andrius Balachovičius.
All events within the Balts’ Unity Day are free of charge.
The event is celebrated to commemorate the battle of the Sun of 22 September 1236 when Lithuanians and Semigallians defeated Livonian Brothers of the Sword and is organised by Liepaja City Council, Ministry of Culture of Republic of Latvia, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Republic of Latvia, Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania and other involved partners and supported by Interreg V-A Latvia-Lithuania programme 2014-2020.
