Sgraffito is a type of decorative wall decoration – decorative plaster that originated in the 15th century, Italy and its name comes from the word Sgraffieate (it.v) – to scratch. The oldest known sgraffito recipe was described by the Italian architect and writer J. Vasari, who attributed this invention to the Florentine artist A. Petrini. This type of plaster was created to ornamentally decorate and create an illusory impression of a stone or brick wall.

Sgraffito is created by applying a fine top layer on a coloured plaster surface, and in the top layer, while it is still wet and soft, marking the contours with a stencil and partially exposing the top layer of plaster, thus revealing the lower layer, the overall composition is formed.

The facade of the Bauska Castle Duke residency is made in late 16th century in the sgraffito technique and decorated with a diamond rust ornament.
