Final Conference “Transformations from Slum to Chic” in Daugavpils

Knowledge, Transformation and Awareness – 3 important “stops” for brownfield development planning and sustainable environment are being discussed in the Conference “Transformations from Slum to Chic” of the project LLI-386 “Trans-form” in Daugavpils on 20 February 2020.

Project participants from partner municipalities and experts had an opportunity to share their experiences and discuss their views about revitalization of degraded areas during 3 thematic STATIONS.

STATION 1 “Knowledge in revitalisation of brownfields” focused on capacity of territorial planners and legal experts working at municipalities and municipal institutions improved within project “Trans-form” through series of theoretical trainings, study trips and elaborated methodological handbook.

Within STATION 2 “Transformation of degraded areas into sustainable environment”  elaborated technical projects and planning documents, maps for revitalisation of particular sites, as well as demo projects in cleaning the degraded and contaminated territories were presented by project partners.

STATION 3 “Awareness on land revitalisation” discussed, how raise awareness on the importance and benefits that bring revitalisation of brownfields to local communities. Urbanist Martynas Marozas presented Neris riverfront regeneration project in Vilnius.  Assicaited professor Dr. Aleksejs Ruža, from Daugavpils University presented a research on reasons why people choose migration and migration prognosis for the future and how it affects degraded areas in shrinking regions.

Participants of the conference emphasized on the necessity to have a common language and understanding of the topic of degraded areas. Knowledge on degraded area transformation will further help municipalities in Latvia and Lithuania make more informed decisions and decide on sustainable management and development process for transformation projects locally.
