LLI-498 Historic road: Raudondvaris – Bauska (HRRB)

The aim of the project was to increase the number of tourists in Kaunas District and Bauska region during the autumn and winter seasons by creating artistic, educational and sports activities, with aspiration to attract visitors with different interests (cultural and active leisure enthusiasts (including youth), history and heritage lovers etc.). All foreseen activities were oriented to increase attractiveness of historic and cultural heritage of partner regions.

New common tourism route Raudondvaris-Bauska was created to promote the cultural heritage of partners’ regions during the off season. It was done through creation of thematic educational programs and events, such as “Baltic treasure” where participants had an opportunity to create handmade souvenirs based on the old crafts heritage of Kaunas district and Bauska region. This program welcomed 522 participants in 40 workshops per both places (Raudondvaris Manor and Bauska Castle). Another newly created educational program “Artificial lighting in Renaissance castle” introduced lightning elements used in renaissance and invited to try activities, that historically were performed in late evenings (Bauska castle). Project partners created artistic musical programs “Night in Renaissance” and “Early music (15th – 17th” century) concert series” performed in both venues.  The first program attracted 200 people and the second (5 early music concerts) welcomed 366 persons per both castles. The audience not only were able to hear historical music instruments and songs, but also had an opportunity to see the costumes and learn some dances of those periods.

To improve both culutural objects and create more quality activities for visitors project partners purchased necessary equipment (replicas of music instruments, renaissance lightings, ice rink and equipment for concerts). In addition, prepared thematic exhibition “Artillery in 17th century” (Bauska castle) and organized of two “Castle day” festivals in autumn at Raudondvaris Manor. The mentioned festival was held in 2021 and 2022 and per both years attracted 10 115 visitors. The “Castle day” presented times from middle ages, renaissance to 19th century and nowadays. Participants could learn about different lifestyles of nobility and townsfolk during the different times. The festival encouraged visitors to leave viewer’s position, take action and be creative in artisans’ workshops, medieval games. Another inclusive tourist attraction was an ice rink installed in Raudondvaris Manor. In 2021, the ice-rink was opened since late November until March of 2022 and welcomed  around 10 000 skaters. It was free of charge and had free lessons for children and adults who wanted to learn how to ice-skate with the help of professional trainer. During the last month (December of 2022) of project implementation it welcomed more than 3000 skaters.

Various local and foreign (Germany, Italy, Latvia, Netherlands, Poland, Switzerland) artists and craftsmen were invited to participate in creative workshops, concerts, seminars for project partners and residents of both regions, during which they had a chance to exchange experience about the tourism situation in both regions during the low season and thought of possible ways to solve existing challenges.

Festival “Castle day” took place in Raudondvaris Manor

On October 28th and 29th the festival “Castle day” took place at Raudondvaris Manor.

On Saturday evening, as the sun was setting, the doors of the Raudondvaris manor stables opened and the ghosts spread through the park. Ephemeral silhouettes held lanterns and wandered among the old trees before turning to the castle, where they held a wild feast. The dance of the ghosts was accompanied by flames of fire until finally the ghosts of the Middle Ages disappeared in smoke. This is how the two-day “Castle Day” festival ended.
