LLI-474 Living by the rivers: development of tourism products based on ancient and modern history in Baltic countries (LivingRivers)

All project partners are located next to the remarkable rivers – Koknese and Jaunjelgava in Latvia are located next to the largest Latvian river Daugava and Kaunas district in Lithuania is situated next to the longest river in Lithuania – Nemunas. Both rivers are known as important ancient trade routes.
Potential of natural water resources (rivers) for tourism purposes is not fully used in the area. There is a lack of innovative and modern ways to show glorious historical past of riverside towns, lack of common cultural events. The overall objective of the project is to boost tourism development built upon the historical, natural and cultural heritage linked to living by the rivers. Project activities will attract tourists to rivers in three ways – to offer new destinations, new attractions and new events at existing and new tourism sites, therefore attract new tourists, invite tourists who already have visited to return and to prolong their stay in the area.
During the project following activities were carried out:

  1. Tours for media and tourism professionals;
  2. Experience exchange trips for entrepreneurs and tourism and culture specialists to partner sites in order to provide the opportunity to learn best practices from project partners;
  3. A promotional video of the riverside towns Kačerginė, Zapyškis, Kulautuva, and Vilkija in Lithuania and Koknese and Jaunjelgava in Latvia for potential visitors. Find it here:   https://www.kaunorajonas.lt/en/representative-videos-of-riverside-towns/
  4. Residencies for young painters in Koknese and for young photographers in Kačerginė to attract the attention of visitors by organizing exhibitions of the created works;

5. Array of cultural events;
6. An international conference about water tourism;
7. Creation of a QR code system that will serve as a tour guide. It will enrich walking tours in Kačerginė, Zapyškis, Kulautuva, Vilkija, Koknese, and Jaunjelgava;

  1. Historical research of Jaunjelgava town. The obtained historical information about the period of river trade will be used for virtual reality tourism stands, a tourist information point, and tourism routes;
  2. The pontoon boat dock in Staburags – a popular stop for water travelers;
  3. Creation of a place for boat parking near Koknese castle ruins. The boat dock in Koknese, a popular spot for tourism and water sports activities, is located in one of the most beautiful places in Latvia on the banks of the Daugava River, near the Koknese castle ruins;

11.Exhibition of ancient water transport vessels – the dugout canoe and the raft, which attract more and more tourists and offer insights into the cultural heritage of ancient river life. The dugout canoe is currently the longest one in Latvia;

  1. Creation of comfortable resting places with 10 gazebos on the other bank of the Daugava – next to Staburags in Jaunjelgava County;
  2. Construction of a mineral water buvette in Kulautuva;
  3. Informative stands in Latvia and an info terminal in Lithuania – Implemented digital information stands with 3D video and photo materials placed in several Tourism Centers, providing information about the natural and cultural history of the Daugava River in a digital and easily understandable way, particularly attracting the younger generation of tourists;

15.Construction of a public restroom in Koknese with ensured environmental accessibility and a baby changing table, which is an important infrastructure object in such a frequently visited tourist spot and is also accessible to persons with special needs.

Apply for participation in the plein air of artists in Koknese 15.08.-20.08.

Aizkraukle Local Municipality invites you to apply for participation in the plein air of artists in Koknese from August 15-20 (6 days, 5 nights). If you are between the ages of 16 and 30 (including) and have experience in visual art, then take part in the plein air “Life by the Rivers”. We especially invite participants from the Interreg V-A Latvia-Lithuania cross-border cooperation program territories (Kurzeme, Zemgale, Latgale, Klaipeda, Telslal, Slaullal, Kaunas, Panevezys, Utena). During this week, we will visit the most beautiful places in Koknese and capture them in works of art, we will make new friendships with creative people, take a boat trip along the Daugava and Perse rivers, take part in various master classes, as well as enjoy live music and, in the end, create an exhibition. Participation in the plein air is for free, but the materials for work must be provided by participants them self (paints, brushes, canvas, paper or cardboard, portable easel and other materials required for the chosen technique). The organizers will provide accommodation in dormitories, meals, transportation during the plein air, master classes, recreational activities, as well as a limited number of easels and canvases for painting. Arrival is with own transport on August 15th (transport from Kuanas to Latvia is provided and covered by Kaunas District Municipality). A more extensive program will be sent to those interested.
