LLI-489 Empowerment of deprived communities of Dusetos and Kraslava by upgrading living conditions through joint involvement in upcycling activities (Practical arts)

The objective of the project – to empower communities to solve their problems by doing things together using resources that they already have.

Within the project Dusetos and Krāslava municipalities have shared creative ideas and best practices in upcycling (which is transforming or reinventing disposable item into something of higher quality)  conceptual  seminar and a study visit to Sweden, also trainings for crafting in different fields (as woodwork, textiles, furniture decoration, crocheting, welding, plastic work, glasswork and etc.) have been organised, together with ”upcrafting” festivals in Zarasai and Kraslava for wider public of the cross-border region, where by-products, waste materials, useless or unwanted products were used for “upcrafting”. During community regeneration initiative volunteer teams have repainted 8 buildings in poor condition and develop 10 cozy public spaces in Dusetos and Krāslava towns thus improving not only the environment but also atmosphere of the area. The creativity of artists and artisans was celebrated in Christmas fair and summer fair, held in both partner towns – Dusetos and Krāslava.

Cozy spaces in Kraslava

Cozy spaces in Kraslava

For some time now, residents and guests of Kraslava have been able to see five cozy spaces developed and located on the streets of Kraslava. They are part of the Practical Arts project. The objects are unusual in that they are made of used things and materials, therefore drawing the public’s attention to the current problem of waste and pollution all over the World.

Transformations

The project LLI-489 “Strengthening the municipalities of Dusetos and Krāslava by improving the living environment through reuse activities” / “PRACTICAL ARTS” has been completed

 

In the project PRACTICAL ARTS participated two partners – the non-governmental organization “Sprendimų centras” from Lithuania and the association Euroregion “Ezeru zeme” from Krāslava, Latvia.

The aim of the project is to strengthen the municipalities of Krāslava and Dusetos, as well as to solve the problems related to the reuse of resources by using different types of materials, which are most often thrown in waste bins.

During the implementation of the project, it was important to involve the residents in the project activities, so that society pay more attention to the reusing of resources and improvement of the environment.

The most important resource that was built within the communities of Dusetos and Kraslava  after implementation of the project No. LLI-489 Practical arts were knowledge of self-empowerment and understanding that upgrading is less about result and more about a process that will have continuous presence.

The project included conceptual and practical trainings for the community members in Dusetos and Kraslava (246 people invoved in 9 trainings and workshop for professionals), Study visit to the first upcycling shoping centre “Retuna mall” in Sweden had inspired Dusetos community to further development and promotion of upcyling initiatives.

After the end of the project both towns- Dusetos and Kraslava were regenerated by creative initiatives- 5 public spaces for each of the partner developed, 8 of the buildings in central part of Dusetos painted, Christmas decorations and Christmas tree and lightings, purchased within the project will be used for a few years after the project.

As it was planned, communities of Dusetos and Kraslava were highly involved in the organization of project events- disseminated information between members, involved in trainings, attracted volunteers.

New type of festivals were started within the project, where different kind of upcycling practices demonstrated and people were involved in the process.

The project has shown that promotion of environmental care and sustainability had become a movement that transformed the towns. When people enjoy living and working together, more and more newcomers are interested to join. Empowered communities of Dusetos and Kraslava were trained to work together to further initiatives of the development of the towns.
