The project was designed for work with unemployed persons residing in deprived communities in remote rural Latvia-Lithuania border areas and offer them education and self-employment possibilities in the field of craftsmanship. Project target – young unemployed persons incl. young parents, pre-retirement age unemployed persons and senior citizens – residing in remote rural areas in Utena and Panevežys counties in Lithuania and Dobele County in Latvia (approx.10 thousand persons). The project aim was to motivate and encourage these people to participate in educational and socio-economic processes for unlocking their potential and changing their lives, as well as for becoming role models for other members of their communities.
The project has developed a tailor-made training system for deprived communities and trained more than 40 local craftsmen as mentors who later trained over 180 representatives of the deprived communities in certain sectors of craftsmanship – textile, knitting, ceramics, woodworking, paper and packaging, etc. The project was also offerring series of theoretical trainings and practical creative workshops for representatives of deprived communities, as well as provide coaching and mentoring support. It was implemented over the period of 2 years by 3 partners – an art incubator in Anyksciai and adult training centres in Panevezys and Dobele – through combining and exchanging their specific experiences in involvement of different target groups in the labour market.

During the project experts developed methodology on how to work with deprived communities and motivate and prepare them for involvement in self-employment activities in the field of craftsmanship. Methodology was elaborated targeted at artisans who will be willing to work with the representatives of the deprived communities (young unemployed persons incl.young parents, pre-retirement age unemployed persons and senior citizens residing in remote rural areas in Utena and Panevezys counties in Lithuania and Dobele County in Latvia) and teach them practical skills in certain sectors of craftsmanship (textile, knitting, ceramics, woodworking, paper and packaging). The Methodological Handbook for Mentors was prepared in English and translated in Latvian and Lithuanian languages.
Methodological Handbook was a basis for other project activities – mentors trainings, trainings for representatives of deprived communities and creative workshops. Total 50 mentors took part in mentors trainings. Later it was organised 3 cycles of 3 days theoretical trainings for representatives of deprived communities in each partner site (total 9 training cycles, 184 participants). Next step – 6 cycles of creative workshops took place in two partners sites – Anyksciai (ceramics, textile incl.sewing, wool felting, knitting and embroidery – 60 participants) and Dobele (woodworking, leather and paper – 63 participants).
Photos from the final event – Conference and Art fair which was held on 28 April, 2022 in Anyksciai art incubator, where Methodological Handbook for Mentors “Motivated to create” was presented and implemented activities were discussed.
