LLI-516 Mažeikiai-Saldus. Active and involved communities (Co-Active)

The objective of this project is to improve living conditions in deprived communities that are located in Mazeikiai and Saldus districts.
Living environment of both municipalities will be improved by building skate parks in Mazeikiai and Saldus and also implementing various educational activities for young people, seniors and all residents of Mazeikiai and Saldus during the project. This will create closer community links and encourage local residents to interact more with each other.
Educational activities will include training for young people on the prevention of harmful habits and the prevention of bullying, training for seniors on the promotion of physical activity and stress management and team building for all residents. Training for all groups first will start in Mazeikiai. After the end of trainings in Mazeikiai, the methodology of educational programs will be improved according to participant survey results. Afterwards, updated training program will be implemented in Saldus. Up to 165 people will participate in educational activities.
After the construction of skate parks in Mazeikiai and Saldus, the opening ceremonies of these parks will be organized, in which the residents of both project partners will participate. These opening ceremonies will include joint sports games, contests, skaters’ performances, short introduction of places where residents of Mazeikiai and Saldus districts can spend their free time, various team building games (teams will be mixed from Lithuanians and Latvians) and also clean up around the skate parks.
Project partners will develop new approaches and ideas on how to improve living conditions and the environment in both partners deprived communities and to increase community motivation to take part in social activities. Both project partners are close to each other and have the opportunity to collaborate better in different areas of the project, including working with disadvantaged communities. Community members and municipal workers implementing this project activity will have the opportunity to get to know each other better, make new connections, to find new opportunities to remove barriers for growth and change communities from deprived to prosperous.

Presenting LLI-516 Co-Active project results

Great news to both Saldus and Mažeikiai district communities! Project CoActive is finished, and both Skate parks are fully operational. All objectives and deliverables, foreseen in the application, were successfully achieved, and all the activities fully implemented. This successful project hopefully will inspire more future common activities to improve lives of local communities, especially in deprived territories in the border region.

During the implementation of the Project, many successful and interesting educational events took place in both Saldus and Mažeikiai, and both local communities were involved and felt the benefit of such joint activity. 32 hours of educational activities in Mažeikiai municipality in total, and 28 hours in Saldus were executed. This number also involve part of the activities, done online with participants from both countries. Asymmetry in training hours among partners occurred due to Covid-19 restrictions, and a wish to protect senior community members in Saldus, thus contact classes for 4 hours were canceled at the time. In general, at least 280 participants were directly involved, of witch 187 were from Lithuania and 93 from Latvia. Participants were from different groups of society – youth, senior citizens, and general local community members. Mažeikiai had 3 events for youth, 2 for senior citizens and 3 for local community members.  Saldus had the same educational events, except in a lesser extent for senior citizens – instead of 2, one event was implemented. Each of mentioned educational events took 4 hours with professional lecturer, in relevant subjects, such as: healthy lifestyle and stress management for seniors, bullying prevention and anti-substance use, positive interaction for youth, and educational events about activating local communities for local community members.

Beside educational activities and joined educational sessions, two public events, celebrating Skate park opening to the public, were held. One event per partner – Skate park opening fest in Mažeikiai was organized on 2nd October 2021 with more than 40 signed participants of various age groups, and open public event Family Day in Saldus Skate Park. Latter was organized on November 28, 2021, with attendance of over 24 signed participants from both countries. These events were a perfect platform to bring neighbors together, and would not have been as successful as it was without smooth and close cooperation between project partners.

Also, in promoting project results, and usage of project’s infrastructure, a promotional video about Saldus skate park was created:

We are happy to announce that the Project LLI-516 Mažeikiai-Saldus. Active and involved communities (Co-Active) was fully and successfully implemented by the end of 2021. Just as it was planned.  Both Project Partners built Skate Parks in their municipalities (Saldus and Mažeikiai), and infrastructure is fully operational, and in fact, very popular among local communities, especially youth. Also, planned educational activities that included trainings for young people on the prevention of harmful habits and the prevention of bullying, training for seniors on the promotion of physical activity and stress management and team building for all residents, proved to be popular and public response and involvement was even better than anticipated.

These small steps of cooperation, especially during a difficult time of Covid 19 pandemic, inspired more optimism for future and improved community spirit among residents in both municipalities. Both opening ceremonies of newly built or extended (in Saldus case) skate parks were organized, and local residents participated in joint sports games, contests, skaters’ performances.
