In order to develop and improve social care services and their quality in Latvia and Lithuania, one of the tasks of the project LLI-341 Aging in Comfort is to strengthen the knowledge of mobile team specialists about the process of home care of clients, medical, psychological and social assistance, self-help measures for family members and neighbors of the client, as well the important role of teams in the daily lives of single people.
Between March 18 and March 29, 2019, 2 training sessions for a total of 40 social care professionals from Latvia and Lithuania were organized in Rezekne and Daugavpils (Lavia), who are already and are planning to become direct providers of home care services. At this stage, two specialist groups each attended 2 topics, namely, “Health problems of the elderly and self-help activities” and “The Basics of Geriatrics”. Experienced palliative care experts from health care institutions in Latvia led and shared the training.
During the training, questions and tasks were discussed on the needs of geriatric people and care problems, taking into account the anatomical physiological and psychological changes, disease processes, care and behavioral characteristics. During the second training session on the health problems of older people, specialists received knowledge on use of medication, cardiovascular system, respiratory system, kidney and urinary tract diseases, endocrinology, digestive system, oncology, musculoskeletal disorders, nervous system diseases, neurogenerative illness, etc., as well as provide information on movement difficulties, immobilized people, skin and oral care and washing, home care self-help activities that can be provided by family members, neighbors, etc. of the elderly.
