With the support of the project implemented by Zemgale Planning Region, the construction of a new recreation place has been completed in Zvejnieklīcis, Salas municipality. It can be found on the picturesque bank of the Daugava with a magnificent view of the Sēlpils castle mound, where until the 13th century was the castle of the ancient Sēlija rulers, which was a significant political and economic center of Sēlija. Today, unfortunately, after the construction of the power plant on the Daugava, the castle mound is almost completely hidden under water. The new recreation area is located next to the Zvejnieklīča open-air stage, which is popular with locals and tourists, and as the head of the Salas municipality Irēna Sproģe admitted, it will be a great addition to this recreation area and will serve as a historical testimony to ancient Baltic culture.
The mentioned environmental object has been created in the form of a shell, because the idea of the construction project arose by studying information about archeological excavations carried out in the vicinity of Sēlpils and provides extensive information about the ancient Sēļi lifestyle. In one of the expeditions, bare shells were found, which were the equivalent of exchange and an ornamental element of the ancient whites.
The recreation area was built within the framework of Interreg V-A Latvia–Lithuania Cross Border Cooperation Programme 2014–2020 project No. LLI-447 “Exploring Balts and Promoting Awareness of the International Cultural Route “Balts’ Road”, arc. “Explore Balts” and will serve to promote the visibility of the new tourism route.
Total projects size is 869 689.02 EUR. Out of them co-funding of European Regional Development Fund is 739 235.65 EUR
