Partners of the project “Improving Governance and Management of Lakes in Kurzeme and North Lithuania” (LIVE LAKE) have started carrying out the planned activities.
The Latvian Nature Conservation Agency has started studying the bed of Lake Usmas in the territory of Moricsala Nature Reserve to identify pollution of household and other waste. The Agency cooperates with the company SIA Taifun and uses both diving services and other modern technologies for studying the underwater. Until now, the situation in the Lake has been evaluated as better than expected and the number of items found is small, but there are places where identification of waste in the topsoil is encumbered by a mud layer of up to 1 m.
Ventspils Municipality has implemented a tender contest and launched development of exploitation rules for Lake Usmas by concluding a contract with the Latvian Institute of Aquatic Ecology, which is an agency of Daugavpils University. It is planned that exploitation rules will be developed until 11 December 2022.
Within the project, Saldus Municipality (the former Brocēni Municipality) has purchased reed cutting equipment—a boat, boat engine, reed cutter, rake, and boat trailer. The reed cutter Dorocutter 3071H will be used to cut reeds and remove aquatic plants in Lake Remtes, Lake Cieceres, and Lake Brocēnu.
Cleaning of Lake Dzirnavu in Aizpute has been started in the section from Liepājas Street until the pedestrian bridge at 5B Liepājas Street. The construction contract was concluded with the company SIA RR Nord. To prevent overgrowing of Lake Dzirnavu, which is located on the Tebra River, the riverbed is cleaned from mud and silt using a floating dredge. The work started in July and it is planned to complete the activities in September this year.
In July 2021, a contract with the company SIA Valkas meliorācija was concluded regarding reconstructing of lock gate on Lake Sasmakas in Talsi Municipality. Within the contract, the existing reinforced concrete canal and dam will be reconstructed and a pedestrian bridge will be built. Lock gate on Lake Sasmakas is in critical condition, thus this reconstruction project and maintaining of a constant water level is an important precondition for preserving the lake for the future.
Directorate of Žemaitija National Park has purchased a reed cutter to be used in managing reeds in Lake Plateliai to reduce the area overgrown due to eutrophication.
