Sticking to the swamps …
Wetlands provide shelter for many protected plants and animals, as well as valuable ecosystems that act as a sponge and reduce the risk of flooding. Wetlands are places where you can enjoy unusual landscapes, the heady scent of pity or flowering heather, berry picking or collecting herbs. Unfortunately, the protected wetlands of Latvia and Lithuania are threatened by trees and shrubs that are rapidly conquering them.
The Latvian-Lithuanian cross-border co-operation project OPEN LANDSCAPE has been an excellent platform for co-operation between Latvian and Lithuanian scientists, municipalities, non-governmental organizations and responsible state institutions wishing to pay attention to wetland protection and care for their natural values.
The aim of the project: to develop a common methodology for the management of wetlands in the Latvian-Lithuanian border region.
Achievements
A two day conference was organised in the municipality of Preiļi, to discuss the results of the project and to exchange scientific information. A three-day tour of the protected natural areas of Latvia and Lithuania was organized. Expert meetings were held in Dusetos (Lithuania), seminars for municipal professionals and residents in the Aizdumblė swamp nature reserve of Elkšnis and Viesīte municipality, as well as in the Pelēči and Pelēči Lake Swamp Nature Reserve, Preiļi Municipality (Latvia), Sarto and Biržai Regional Parks (Lithuania).
Educational corner in Viesite municipalit is establihed. It is for strengthening capacity of municipality in public awareness and dissemination of knowledge of management of open wetland habitats. PP6 participated in implementation of management measures according prepared management plan for Supes purvs, but some good practices of management of wetlands in Viesite municipality as well as all other outcomes and results of project activities are presented in Educational corner. All the equipment purchased by PP6 is placed in the municipality of Viesite in Educational corner and serve for strengthening capacity of municipality in public awareness and dissemination of knowledge of management of open wetland habitats. Nature management plan is prepared for Supes purvs which is situated in Viesite municipality (territory of PP6) thus all the equipment are related with such activities: A.T1.1, A.T1.3, A.T2.2, A.T2.4. In the planning documents it is defined that Viesite municipality territory is one of the greenest territories in Latvia. The project plays very important role for education of society members, for provision of visual material to raise environment friendly approach for all stakeholders as well as general public, land owners, specialists, entrepreneurs, teachers and pupils. Personal computer with software is in the Educational corner in the building of the administrative centre. All information and materials produced by the project are available.
