Folwark (pusmuiža) Berķenele is the childhood home of the Latvian poet Rainis. The manor house is restored and includes both an exhibition and guest apartments. The well maintained orchard has fruit trees from different periods of Latvian history –wild pears possibly planted in 19th century, local pear varieties ‘Durbes Vasaras’ and ‘Duļa’ from 1920ties, fruit trees of traditional varieties from Soviet times and new orchard planted at present. An alley of pruned myrobalan plum trees (Prunus cerasifera) leads to the house. There is also a vegetable and herb garden. The main attraction is the event held there annually during fruit harvest season – “Ābolu ceļš “ (Apple road), when the visitors see the orchard, are informed about apples, can pick them, cook them in various ways and taste the products
