LLI-303 Life in clean environment – a better future! (Clean brownfields)

The project will provide sustainable and resource-efficient restoration of degraded territories, owned by municipalities. Cross border cooperation will ensure more efficient resource and best practice applying.

The project will carry out regeneration of brownfields in six places, provide innovative and professional brownfield planning, and promote the qualitative development of brownfields in the future. Within project following activities will be carried out: two degraded building scheduled for the disassembly is not suitable for living in Saldus and Ventspils county municipalities, regeneration of a ditch and pond polluted with oil products in Kuldiga, cleaning up of urban area (former Soviet military base) in Skrunda with an area of 11,34 ha, reconstruction of a stadium in Kaunas with an area of 1,04 ha and territory of the “military town” cleaning from petroleum products  in Telsiai with an area of 3 ha. Klaipeda district municipality will prepare pond recreational project. Specialists from all partners will increase their professional knowledge by participating in training and experience exchange trips.

In total, the project will provide a clean environment in 15,96 ha in Kurzeme, Kaunas, Klaipeda and Telsiai.

More articles

During the project specialists from 23 municipalities in Kurzeme and Kaunas region raised their professional competence in brownfield management, cleaning and development planning. Altogether 268 specialists participated in 5 seminars, 3 thematic workshops, 3 round-table discussions and two study visits.

Experts from universities of both countries – University of Latvia, Riga Technical University, University of Agriculture of Latvia, Kaunas University of Technology were invited to share newest approaches and solutions for degraded territories. Project partners and representatives of other municipalities were encouraged to work at incorporation of degraded territories theme in the local and regional planning documentation to proceed with further projects in this direction.

Putting degraded territories in order brings several important benefits:
clean and safe environment,
territories returned to public and business life,
economic use of the existing resources (land, buildings, technical networks, roads).

Klaipeda District Municipality prepared technical documentation (geological survey) for 150 ha territory in Gargždai that will be used to develop former gravel quarry area for tourism and sports activities in future.

Territories in 6 municipalities were cleaned for public use benefiting local businesses and at least 21 000 local residents who have received clean and safe environment with a perspective to be developed in territories for public and business activities.

Cleaned sites in Telšiai and Skrunda are prepared for local businesses, at least 50 companies can start long term planning of their activities there in future. One of the potential business use examples is warehousing and logistics.

Cleaned territories:

Kuldīga County Municipality – a ditch and a pond in the former municipal gardening cleaned of black oil, 212 m2 area prepared for public activities to be developed in future, address: Siltumnīcu Str. 12, Kuldīga, Kuldīga County, Latvia;

 

 

 

 

 

Skrunda County Municipality – a former military territory cleaned, 11,34 ha area prepared for business activities in future, address: Kalna Str. 17, Skrunda, Skrunda County, Latvia;

 

 

 

 

 

Ventspils County Municipality –  a five story derelict, polluted building demolished, territory cleaned, 5223 m2 area for public use developed, address: Rūpnīcas Str. 7, Ugāle, Ventspils County, Latvia;

 

 

 

 

 

Kaunas City Municipal Administration – a former military territory cleaned (10 400 m2), a football stadium for public use built instead, address: Kareiviniu Str. 13, Panemune, Kaunas, Lithuania;

 

 

 

 

 

Telšiai District Municipality – a former military oil polluted territory cleaned from oil products, 3,0 ha area prepared for business activities in future, address: former military barracks, Telsiai, Telsiai district, Lithuania;

 

 

 

 

 

Saldus County Municipality – a two story derelict, polluted building demolished territory cleaned, 450 m2 area for public use developed, address: “Ceļinieki”, Rubas, Saldus County, Latvia.
